2026-04-13 MacBook upgrade

12:25 AM I tried creating a new blog entry via Copilot Cloud, but it wasn’t a great experience. The environment took a long time to start up, and context like attached images in issues in the same repo didn’t work — though to be fair, Claude Code had this problem initially too (we just worked around it). Cloud permissions are too strict. I also didn’t like the PR-based process — it’s not very interactive, and having to cc Copilot in every comment on the PR is tedious. I much prefer the direct, immediate feedback loop of Claude Code on my local machine.

12:36 AM I ordered a MacBook upgrade today. My current one has only 18 GB of RAM and has started showing warnings about applications running out of memory. I didn’t even realize I had only 18 GB on it — considering the amount of money I spent the last time I upgraded, that stings. It cost a bomb this time too, even after the trade-in. I hope I can keep this one around for more than a year and a half; that kind of turnaround time for a MacBook is a bit ridiculous. I really don’t want to make this a habit, but I also can’t see myself struggling with something as basic as insufficient RAM.

I think laptops should have a minimum of 32 GB RAM. The model I was looking at didn’t offer that — the only options were 24 GB and 48 GB. I spent some time working with Perplexity to figure out which upgrades actually mattered and ended up going with the 48 GB.

I didn’t go for the highest-spec MacBook Pro chip, but I also didn’t want to settle for the minimum. The Pro chip is a worthwhile bump, though between the two Pro variations, I went with the base one — the higher-end option was only a couple of extra cores and not worth the $600–$700 premium. I should be getting it in 2–3 days.

Also, in separate news: I scheduled an Apple Support appointment at the Eaton Centre for tomorrow afternoon. I’ll bring my AirPods Max and see what they can do.
